Many PoE 2 players first equip Pillar of the Caged God expecting a conventional quarterstaff upgrade, then discover that the real power sits across the rest of the loadout. The weapon turns Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence into offensive stats, so a ring with a high attribute roll can sometimes beat a supposedly stronger replacement staff. That makes Path of Exile 2 Currency valuable for more than buying crafting materials, since every gear decision has to be judged against the weapon's attribute scaling. Pillar works best when the entire character is built around that interaction rather than treating the staff as an isolated item.

Build Around the Staff, Not Just Beside It

Pillar of the Caged God grants 16% increased Melee Strike Range, then adds 10% increased Weapon Damage per 10 Strength, 1% increased Attack Speed per 10 Dexterity, and 1% increased Area of Effect per 10 Intelligence. These bonuses change the usual upgrade checklist. A rare amulet with moderate life and resistances but a large Strength roll may deliver more practical DPS than a small weapon damage improvement elsewhere. The same logic applies to rings, gloves, boots, and even jewels when they offer attributes without forcing major defensive sacrifices.

Strength should normally be the first offensive target because it directly improves the staff's weapon damage. It also helps satisfy equipment and skill requirements, making early progression smoother. However, stacking it blindly can create a character that hits hard but collapses in difficult maps. Keep life, elemental resistances, armour or evasion, and reliable recovery at a comfortable level before chasing luxury attribute rolls. Pillar's scaling is powerful only when the character survives long enough to use it, especially during boss mechanics and crowded rare monster encounters.

Choose Dexterity or Intelligence for the Content You Play

Dexterity becomes more appealing after the build has enough Strength to feel consistent. Each 10 Dexterity adds attack speed, which improves the rhythm of melee skills and can make movement between packs feel much less sluggish. This is particularly useful for players who dislike a heavy, deliberate playstyle. Intelligence offers a different payoff: increased Area of Effect. It has limited value in a single-target encounter, but extra coverage can noticeably improve map clear, reduce missed enemies, and make dense layouts less frustrating. Mapping builds can therefore accept slightly less raw damage for a broader and faster attack pattern.

Runeforging Is a Milestone, Not an Automatic First Step

The weapon's upgrade path begins with the original Pillar, 425 Verisium, and Vorana's Crest of the Scythe for the Runeforged version. The next stage requires that version, 10 Exceptional Verisium, and Olroth's Crest of the Sun. Runemastered Pillar changes its displayed base damage to Cold Damage while keeping the 16% increased Melee Strike Range. This is a meaningful long-term goal, but it should be compared with the rest of the character's progression. If your amulet lacks attributes, your boots have poor resistances, or your rings provide no life, those slots may offer a larger gain for the same investment.

The strongest Pillar setups usually progress in layers: secure enough Strength for dependable damage, repair defenses, then add Dexterity or Intelligence according to whether the character prioritizes attack speed or mapping coverage. Test upgrades in real content rather than trusting the character sheet alone, because smoother clear and better survivability often outperform a small theoretical DPS increase.
